We are extremely delighted to welcome Nikki May back to the store this August to celebrate the publication of her second novel, This Motherless Land.

Her debut novel, Wahala, is one of our all-time top 10 bestsellers in store - it was a hugely popular book club pick and remains a firm favourite of our members!

She last visited in March 2023 for one of our most memorable events of the year, so we couldn't be more excited that she's returning to Edinburgh and giving us an opportunity to hear all about her new book. This is one you don't want to miss!

Tickets are £5 and can be redeemed against any purchase on the evening of the event.

About the book

When Funke’s mother dies in an accident in Lagos, she’s sent to live with her maternal family in England. Against a backdrop of condescension and mild neglect, sensible Funke strives to fit in, determined to become one of them.

Free-spirited Liv has always wanted to break free of her joyless family, to be nothing like them. Fiercely protective of Funke, she at last has an ally. The two cousins give each other what they need most: love.

But the past casts long shadows and the choices made by their mothers haunt them, shaping the trajectory of their adult lives. Can they escape their legacy?

Witty, warm, hugely entertaining, This Motherless Land bridges three decades and two continents, delving into the thorny territories of race and culture and belonging. At its heart is a story about love and how it can make the difference between surviving and thriving.

About the author

Born in Bristol, raised in Lagos, Nikki May is proud to be Anglo-Nigerian. She ran a successful ad agency before turning to writing and now lives in Dorset with her husband, two standard schnauzers, and way too many books.

Her debut novel WAHALA was inspired by a long (and loud) lunch with friends. It was published around the world in January 2022 and is being adapted into a major BBC TV drama. This Motherless Land is her second novel.
